A minor in Astrobiology will train students in the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology as a minor complementing their major area of concentration.  Students of astronomy, biosciences, chemistry, geosciences, and planetary sciences are often interested in interdisciplinary or astrobiology research.  This program will allow students to develop a strong core of understanding and helps place their major field in a broader context and can provide a foundation for graduate research.

Minor Requirements:

9 units of core courses chosen from the following list:

  • MCB 315 Key Concepts in Quantitative Biology
  • ASTR 406 The Nature and Origins of Life
  • ASTR 488 Astrochemistry
  • ASTR 475 Planetary Astrobiology
  • PTYS 450 Origin of the Solar System and Other Planetary Systems
  • GEOS 484 The Coevolution of Earth and the Biosphere

9 units chosen by the student and minor advisor, subject to final approval.Possible courses include:

  • ASTR 300A, ASTR 403, ASTR 442, BIOC 462A, BIOC 462B, CHEM 400B, CHEM 480A, CHEM 480B, CHEM 481, CMM 479, ECOL 380, ECOL 408L, ECOL 421, ECOL 426, ECOL 438, ECOL 453, ECOL 465, ECOL 479, ECOL 496N, ENVS 425, GEOG 438, GEOS 302, GEOS 403, GEOS 426A, GEOS 430, GEOS 438, GEOS 442, GEOS 466, GEOS 478, GEOS 497K, MCB 396I, MCB 414, MCB 479, MIC 425, PHIL 421, PHYS 403, PTYS 403, PTYS 407, PTYS 442
Double Use of Minor Course Work:

Courses from other majors and minors can be used to fulfill the Astrobiology minor requirements.

Declaring the Minor

To declare the minor, please make an appointment with Amy Brenton (amy@lpl.arizona.edu or 621-6954).  Students will also interview with an astrobiology faculty member.

Additional Information

The required courses are not offered every semester.  Please work with the Astrobiology advisor to create a program plan.
